Childhood Obesity National Community Based Plan managed by The McCarron Group

The McCarron Group is proud to announce it’s collaborative work with Shaping America’s Youth (SAY), a non-profit organization focused on childhood obesity on a ground breaking study that has been published online in the American Academy of Pediatrics. The McCarron Group was the managing partner and provided the overall management and organizational structure for conducting this multi-year research and community plan process. SAY utilized the medical and research expertise from The McCarron Group which recruited experts to create and conduct an online survey and participate in a national town hall meeting process which engaged citizens throughout this country to discuss how to prevent childhood obesity at a community level. The results of the meetings were analyzed from the citizens’ recommendations in the five meetings and published in the journal, American Academy of Pediatrics. These findings will serve as the foundation for a national Community Based Plan of Action. The mission of the project was to assure the voices of families and communities are integrated into local and national policy to improve the nutrition, physical activity and health of children and Youth. The McCarron Group contracted with AmericaSpeaks to conduct the large scale meetings.

The McCarron Group specializes in providing medical experts for health and nutrition issues as well as providing design, management and execution of research projects. The Shaping America’s Youth plan resulted in bringing together stakeholders from both the private and public sectors to work together to help develop a scientific and community based model to prevent childhood obesity.

Deconstructing Health Myths: Salt

At The McCarron Group, many urban myths are addressed each day as we assist consumers in their structuring healthier lives. Diet is basic and salt is frequently a topic we address.  For most of us when it comes to salt we find it has been denied a place at the table. Decades of US federal admonishment has cultivated this viewpoint, which has culminating in a call from the NYC Dept. of Health to reduce city-wide salt consumption significantly over the next 5 years a position endorsed by many public health experts.

Salt has a bad reputation, but what if it’s not so bad for folks in Portland or around the world?  Consider the fact that salt (NaCl) is a mineral compound that in tandem with other metabolic factors functions to produce physiological equilibrium in your body.  Consider the fact that a certain amount of salt is necessary in your diet.  This is a distilled version of the argument made by Portland physician David McCarron and national medical colleagues in the medical journal CJASN. According to McCarron and his research colleagues from UC Davis and Washington University, St Louis, salt intake is well-regulated in a healthy body, and attempts like those made by the NYC government are scientifically shaky.  That perspective was recently featured in the Science Times Section of the New YorK Times: (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/science/23tier.html). As John Tierney of the Times quoted Dr. McCarron, “until unbiased, properly controlled clinical trials are performed, government regulation of salt is unwise and potentially harmful to many individuals.”

Listen to your body, be moderate, and above all become educated. In this case, don’t fear salt.  Good news for most and certainly for the everyday gourmet!
